Multiple choice: When is a free speculative fiction short story worth your time?
- When others sing its praises.
- When it plugs into timeless themes.
- When it makes you rich.
Answer: A, B, and C!
When others sing its praises.
Kevin Miller, an author and developmental editor for 25 years whose books include the best-selling Up the Creek!, said this about my short story “Mrs. Finney’s Special Vine”:
- “Great story! Lots of points of connection for me.”
In addition, Alex McGilvery, another noted author and developmental editor, said the following about the tale:
- “It is a delightful story.”
Finally, professional SF artist Todd Tennant, whose works include a commissioned online graphic novel of Godzilla 1994, made this comment:
- “You knocked it out of the park with this one.”
When it plugs into timeless themes.
Friendship. Coming of age. Death.
“Mrs. Finney’s Special Vine” covers all of these.
When it makes you rich.
Okay, I’m fudging a bit on this one – after reading the story, you won’t be receiving a seven-figure check from Publishers Clearing House.
However, you may find yourself richer in the sense of having read a story that explores the geography of the soul using the tools of imaginative fiction.

What do you have to lose?
Sounds like a very interesting premise!
Thanks! A few weeks ago, I ran it by two professional developmental editors (these guys are fair, but they can be blunt — tough love), but both made only minor suggestions, and both said they thought it was a great story. One of the editors said the ending reminded him of watching his mother recently pass away; he said my details were quite accurate.
The beginning of an interesting story.
Thanks, Peter! I appreciate your encouragement. I hope you read the story through to the end.
Looking forward to reading this!
Thank you! I hope you like it.
